Not Fear but Strength

Many followers of Christ has verses they love but many will have one that they call their “Life” verse.  Which I guess means (since no one has ever really told me what that means) that it is the one verse out of the entire Bible that they will cling to for the rest of their lives.

Or maybe it could mean it is the verse that brings clarity and meaning to their life.

Whichever meaning you would like to attach to it is fine by me; but I prefer the first one up there.

Between my Junior and Senior year of high school I worked at the summer camp I had grown up going to all my life.  I was a Camp Counselor . . . and I absolutely loved it!! I have very fond memories of that summer.  I met great Christians ~ guys and gals ~ the ones who are serious about their walk with the Lord.  And we got to hang out, play with kids, be independent . . . but more than all the fun was how God grew me that summer.

I believe it was that summer that I found MY “Life” verse.  I don’t recall now how I came across it ~ if a speaker used it in a talk one week, or if it was read in Staff devotions or if I just read it during one of my own quiet times with the Lord. I don’t recall now why this verse spoke to me so much . . . all I know is that it went deep into my heart and soul and I knew it would never leave.

(I’m sure you are all waiting with much anticipation to know which verse it is, right?)

My “Life” verse is from the book of Isaiah, chapter 41, verse 10. It says this:

Fear not, for I am with you;
         Be not dismayed, for I am your God;
                  I will strengthen you, I will help you,
      I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
(The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. 2001 (Is 41:10). Wheaton: Standard Bible Society)

I’m not naturally a fearful person nor am I an anxious person really, but this verse struck a cord with me. I think it so  spoke to me because it communicated to me that no matter what I was feeling (or ever would feel in the future) . . . I knew and loved the one true God who was with me, helping me, upholding me but even more importantly (to me anyway) was that He was and would strengthen me!

That thought empowered me . . . with God I didn’t have to fear because He would be my strength and He would always carry me through anything!

I have clung to this verse through many interesting and challenging times in my life. I’m sure I will continue to cling to it.  Why wouldn’t I . . . it is a promise that brings me much peace.

What is your favorite verse in God’s Word?  What verse do you cling to?
