Wisdom’s Rewards

scales-unbalanced

Chapter 3 of Proverbs gives us insight into what it will mean to us if we pursue wisdom.  It says that we will live longer (v. 1).  Living by wisdom we will be blessed.

Years Ago . . . .

I read an article written by John Trent in which he spoke of what it means to be “bless”.  The word actually means “to bow the knee.”  Now, we don’t always bow down to others, but the idea of seeing and adding value to someone’s life is something we all can do.

There is also, as John Trent wrote, part of the ‘blessing’ that means ‘honor’ which literally brings into play the idea of adding ‘value or weight’.  Think of it this way, it’s like putting a coin on a scale to tip the it in a good direction.

Seeking wisdom is like tipping the ‘scale’ in the right direction for us.

As I walked through Proverbs 3 . . . this is what I found.

Wisdom says “Do Not . . . .”

  • forget its teachings
  • be unkind or untruthful
  • lean on your own understanding
  • be ‘wise’ in your own eyes
  • reject discipline
  • depart from wisdom
  •  be afraid of sudden fear or storms
  • withhold good from neighbors
  • deceive others
  • devise harm on others
  • envy ‘men of violence’ or choose their ways

Wisdom says “IF you keep it . . . ”

  • you will have a long life
  • you will have peace
  • you will have favor & good repute
  • your paths will be straight
  • you will have riches & honor
  • you will have abundance
  • you will see how precious it is
  • you will have life in your soul
  • your way will be secure
  • you will not fear and you will have sweet sleep
  • there will be intimacy, blessing, grace & honor in your life

Which Way Will You Seek?

“Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart.  So you will find favor and good success in the sight of God and man.” Prov. 3.3-4
